Javelina Hall of Fame
Trenton Fowler was a member of the Javelina football team in 1948 and 1949 and also participated in track and field. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2006.
He transferred to Texas A&I after two seasons at Paris Junior College. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps before playing with the Javelinas.
Fowler, from Corpus Christi, was a halfback in football and helped led the Javelinas to the best record among the independent teams in Texas in 1948. He was the sixth leading independent scorer.
Former Kingsville Record sports editor Jake Trussell listed the all-time best plays in Javelina football history in a column in the 1950s and eight were by Fowler.
These included an 80-yard run against Sul Ross, a 63-yard punt return against Abilene Christian, a 59-yard run against AustinCollege, a 49-yard run against Corpus Christi and a 38-yard punt return against Daniel Baker.
Fowler was the Javelinas’ second leading scorer in 1948 and led the team in the category in 1949.
After receiving his degree, he worked as a site surveyor for Tenneco Oil Co. for years and then was with Pitney Bowles. He spent the final 20 years of his career as a systems analysis for the Texas State Auditor Office.
He died in 2004 and his wife, Mary Jo, also a Texas A&I graduate, died last November.
He has a son, Burt Fowler of Mountain City, and a daughter, Cynthia Fowler of North Carolina.
Two grandchildren, Jason and Mary Nicole Fowler, live in Austin.
