Javelina Hall of Fame
Matt Hickl, from Friendswood, was selected as one of the LSC’s top 75 athletes in the league’s 75-year history earlier this year for his achievements in track and field. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2007.
He still holds the NCAA Division II national indoor pole vault record, winning the event in 1999 with a vault of 18-1.
Hickl has the all-time best outdoor vault for the Javelinas at 18-0.5 and his 18-1 mark stands as a school mark as well.
He won the LSC gold medal in 1998 (17-1.50) and 1999 (17-6.25).
Hickl was NCAA Division II All-America four times, twice indoors and twice outdoors.
In addition to track and field, Hickl was also a defensive back for the Javelina football team.
His father, Ray Hickl, is a member of the Javelina Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 1980. Ray was an All-American football player who was with the New York Giants after finishing his collegiate career.
