Javelina Hall of Fame
Larry Grunewald, an All-American on the Javelina football team, was a linebacker in 1973-76. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1994.
From Bloomington, Grunewald was called “the toughest player I’ve seen for his size” by Javelina Hall of Fame coach Gil Steinke.
Grunewald was Associated Press Little All-America in 1976 and was All-Lone Star Conference his junior and senior seasons. He was selected as the LSC’s top defensive lineman in 1976.
He was honored as LSC player of the week twice in 1975.
Grunewald was named the most valuable player in the 1976 NAIA national championship game.
During his four seasons in the Javelina lineup, the team compiled a 40-8-0 record, won three NAIA national championships and captured three LSC titles.
After receiving his degree, he was an engineering trainee at Brown & Root in Houston in 1977-78 and became associated with Triple B Inc. in 1978-80. He was president and owner of Triple G Sandblasting and Painting, Inc., in Victoria from 1980 until his death in the spring of 1994.
Grunewald was married to the former Laura Lee Mangold and they are the parents of a son, Brandon, and a daughter, Amber.
