Lorie Martinez Ruiz, from Corpus Christi (Incarnate Word), was a four-year letterwinner for the Javelinas and holds the NCAA Division II, Lone Star Conference and school records for most three-point goals made in a career. She was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2006.
She ended with 385 three-pointers and had a season high of 104 in 1997-98. Her single-game total was 10, those coming against National Christian in 2001-02. All three are school records.
She also holds the school records for best free-throw percentage in a season (.911) and career (.852).
Ruiz is in the Javelina 300 Club four times.
She had a single-game high of 36 points, that coming in 1999-2000 against St. Edward’s. That was the fourth highest total ever for a member of the women’s team.
She averaged 18.1 points a game her freshman year, 14.8 points a game her sophomore seasons, 14.9 points her junior season and 13.6 points her senior year.
She played on Javelina teams that won the NCAA Division II South Central Region title in 2000-01 and advanced into the Elite Eight. She was on the 1999-2000 squad that won the Lone Star Conference championship.
Ruiz was on the NCAA Division II All-America freshman team and was LSC freshman of the year. She made the All-LSC squad and was All-LSC academic.
She was selected to the NCAA Division II All-South Central Region squad in 1998-99.
Ruiz has been inducted into the National Hispanic Hall of Fame and has had her jersey retired by the Javelina athletic department, becoming only the second athlete and the first female to be so honored.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in human sciences from TAMUK and a master’s degree at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
She was store manager of Abercrombie & Fitch in Corpus Christi for two years after serving as assistant manager for three years.
Ruiz recently accepted a position as volleyball, basketball and track and field coach at Haas Junior High School in Corpus Christi.
She is married to former Javelina baseball player Orlando Ruiz and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Martinez of Corpus Christi. A sister, Audrey, also played for the Javelina basketball team.
