Javelina Hall of Fame
Anthony Phillips, a standout in football and track and field at Texas A&I and Texas A&M-Kingsville in the early 1990s, will be inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame Nov. 15 in the Memorial Student Union Building on campus.
Phillips, who was a defensive back in football and a sprinter in track, is the last of the inductees to be announced.
Phillips was a multi-All-American in football and track.
He was Associated Press Little All-America, American Football Coaches Association All-America, Football Gazette All-America, NCAA Division II All-America and C.M. Frank All-America in football his senior season.
Phillips was Football Gazette defensive player of the year and Lone Star Conference defensive back of the year.
He was All-Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II all-region.
Phillips had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a 1993game with Angelo State and had an 88-yard return against Southwest Texas the same season.
Phillips was drafted in the third round by the Atlanta Falcons after finishing his Javelina career and also played with the Minnesota Vikings. He was with the Falcons in 1994-97 and with the Vikings in 1997-99.
Phillips also played with the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Rampage and the Buffalo Destroyers.
In track and field, he was an NCAA Division II All-American in 1993 in the 100-meter dash and
400-meter relay. He ran a leg on the sprint relay unit that won the national championship in 1993 in a time of 39.36.
Phillips won an LSC gold medal in the 100-meter dash (10.04w) in 1993.
His 10.17 time, without the wind, is the second best ever for a Javelina, second to Darrell Green’s 10.08.
The national winning time of 39.36 in the 400-meter relay in 1993 is the best ever for a Javelina unit.
The 1994 team, with Phillips running the anchor leg, had a best of 40.47.
He is currently a medical assistant in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Phillips is the father of three children: Anthony Jr., 18; Tayion, 14, and Arianna, 10.
