Javelina Hall of Fame
Jack Trussell was a sportswriter for the Kingsville-Bishop Record-News and a sportscaster for radio station KINE for more than 20 years prior to his death in 1971.
He attended Texas A&I in the mid-1930s and wrote for the student newspaper. His interest in sports writing and the Javelinas began with this experience.
Trussell had a daily afternoon news program on the Kingsville radio station and during football season, had a daily morning program as well.
His interests extended beyond sports. He had a 30-minute jazz music show on weekdays and built a personal collection of jazz records that numbered more than 4,000. The collection was donated to Del Mar College after Trussell’s death.
Trussell served as master of ceremonies for the South Texas Jazz Festival each year from its beginning until his death.
In addition to his sports and jazz shows on KINE, he also had a movie program during which he discussed the latest films. He often attended as many as eight or nine movies in a week.
Trussell, who was a Kingsville native, wrote poems and his two books of poems went through several printings. The books have been sold in several countries. He was working on a third book at the time of his death.
Trussell was married to the former May Minter of Hebbronville and their children are Mary Jacqueline Trussell of New York City, Philip Ransom Trussell of Austin and Robert C. Trussell of Kansas City, Mo.
