Javelina Hall of Fame
Randy Johnson probably did more to bring national attention to Texas A&I than any other athlete up to the time he participated with the Javelinas. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1981.
After finishing his career in 1965, Johnson played in the Blue-Gray game where he was chosen the most valuable player, played in the Coaches’ All-America game where he was MVP and was one of the top performers in the Senior Bowl.
Johnson was a first round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons and received national headlines after being drafted and receiving the all-star game recognition.
He set dozens of LSC and school records while playing quarterback for the Javs. He was the team’s top passer for four years, led the team in rushing in 1964 and was the leading scorer in 1965.
Johnson led the LSC in passing in 1964 and was named the league’s MVP that season. He was All-America in 1964 and 1965 and made all-conference twice.
Johnson was on the LSC team of the decade for the 1960s.
He was a captain in 1965.
After concluding his pro career, Johnson, from San Antonio, was a sales representative for the Centex Beverage Co. of Austin.
