Pete Murray served as an offensive coach for the Javelinas in 1966-69 and 1976-84 and was also golf coach. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2001.
Murray, a native of Arlington, played college football at Hardin-Simmons where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
He first joined the Texas A&I staff in 1966 and coached through the 1969 season. He returned in 1976 and was on the staff through the 1984 campaign.
Murray coached at Brownwood High School for six years before joining the Javelina staff in 1966. He left in 1970 to take the head job at Lubbock Estacado High School.
He was at Estacado for five seasons before taking a position at H.M. King High School in Kingsville. After being with the Javelinas in 1976-84, he returned to King High School where he was athletic director and head coach until 1990.
Murray worked for Durham Oilfield Service in 1990-95.
He was a board member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and was a coach in the Shiners’ All-Star football game.
He has been inducted into the Coastal Bend Coaches Hall of Fame.
While with the Javelinas, he was on the staff of two national championship teams and squads that won six Lone Star Conference titles. The Javelinas also captured numerous offensive statistical titles during Murray’s tenure and he had several players who had National Football League careers.
Murray and his wife, Anita, have two daughters, Melissa and Melanie.
