Javelina Hall of Fame
Ted Carley was the head coach of the Javelina men’s basketball program from 1954-67 and served as Gil Steinke’s assistant coach on the football program from 1954-61. He compiled a record of 127-196 in 13 seasons at the helm of Carley’s Cagers, finished his coaching career with the most wins all-time in program history that stood for over 30 years, and tied the program record in wins during the 1963-64 season with a 15-9 finish.
The Javelinas gathered a total of 30 Lone Star Conference citations under the direction of Carley, five of which were First Team All-LSC honors. He coached the first two All-Americans in program history in Don McDonald (1955-58) and Phil Shirk (1960-64) as McDonald succeeded Carley as head coach of the program following the 1966-67 campaign. McDonald was an NAIA All-America second team selection following the 1956-57 season, while Shirk was a two-time NAIA All-America first team member, first after the 1961-62 campaign and again after the 1963-64 season.
Carley helped break the color barrier on campus as Hank Allen was a member of the 1959-60 Javelina men’s basketball team as the first African American student-athlete. He was also a member of the 1959 NAIA National Championship football program inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2009. He currently resides in Frisco, Texas, and is retired.
