Javelina Hall of Fame
Betty Brewer Ford was instrumental in the establishing of the current women’s intercollegiate athletic program at TAMUK. She was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2001.
She was a member of the Texas A&I health and physical education faculty in 1968 when she spearheaded a drive to get intercollegiate athletics for women at the University.
She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree from Texas A&I. She has done post-graduate work at the University of Florida, Jacksonville (Fla.) University and the University of Arkansas.
A native of McRae, Ark., she coached basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton at Texas A&I from 1968-72. She was the women’s athletic director from 1972-76 and was on the Athletic Council while at the University.
Ford served as a commissioner for the Texas Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women for two years. She was the director or assistant for the UIL basketball clinic for 10 years and helped with the Region IV-3A UIL playoffs.
She was chair, secretary and treasurer of the South Texas Board of Women Officials for several years and was president, secretary and treasurer for the Texas Association of College Teachers.
Ford served two terms on the Faculty Senate at Texas A&I and was treasurer of Phi Delta Kappa for three years.
Ford was honored for her contributions to the physical education program at St. Martin’s School.
Since leaving Texas A&I, she has been a volunteer with the Hays County Justice Center and has been a volunteer with the Canyon Lake Action Center.
She resides in New Braunfels with her husband, Dale Ford. Her children are Pamela Brewer Kerr of St. Louis, Mo., Beth Brewer Nicholas of Allen, Thomas W. Brewer of Plano and Michael Ford of Houston.
