Javelina Hall of Fame
Patricia Rivers, from Giddings, became one of the Javelinas’ most versatile athletes while attending Texas A&M-Kingsville. She was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1998.
She was a two-time All-Lone Star Conference honoree in basketball and was named to the LSC all-tournament team. She was on the Kodak Women’s All-America honorable mention team after being selected to the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association all-regional unit.
Rivers’ 21.2 scoring average in 1991-92 is the 18th best ever for an LSC female. She has 573 points and that’s the second highest total in a season for a Javelina.
She scored 37 points in a 1990-91 game and that’s the second highest total ever and she also had single-game highs of 34 (twice), 31 and 30. She holds school records for most field goals made in a game (17).
Rivers was a member of the volleyball team in 1992 and led the squad in several statistical categories.
She led the women’s track and field team in scoring in 1991 and 1992 and was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American. She was on the All-America team in the 200-meter dash in 1991 and in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in 1992.
She was the 1991 NCAA Division II national champion in the 200.
Rivers was selected as the LSC’s most valuable track performer at the 1992 meet after winning the 200-meter and 400-meter dash titles. She was the 1991 conference winner in the 200.
She was on LSC basketball and track academic teams and was a Dean’s List student. She was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
Rivers was the Gil Steinke Award recipient her senior year. That award goes to the outstanding female athlete in the athletic program.
She is currently head track and volleyball coach and a teacher in the Lexington Independent School District. She has a three-year-old child, Darrecia Johnson.
