Javelina Hall of Fame
Heath Sherman ranks as one of the all-time top rushers in college football history. From El Campo, he was with the Javelinas in 1985-88. His backfield blocking is credited with helping running back Johnny Bailey become college football’s all-time leading rusher. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1996.
In his freshman season, Sherman was named the Lone Star Conference freshman of the year and was on the All-LSC squad, a spot he earned for four consecutive seasons. He was also on the All-Texas team as a rookie.
He was the LSC offensive back of the year as well as all-conference in his sophomore campaign. And as a junior, he was again all-league.
Sherman was Football News All-America first team in his senior year and he was selected the LSC offensive back of the year.
Sherman rushed for 1,515 yards his sophomore season and this is the fifth best season mark in the history of the LSC. He and Bailey, who had 2,011 the same year, became the best one-two backfield combination in the history of collegiate football.
Sherman’s 4,654 career rushing yards rank him as the 28th all-time career rusher in college football history. His 378 career points rank the 18th best in that category.
The Javelina back ranks as the second leading career rusher in Texas or LSC history, second only to teammate Bailey.
Sherman led the LSC in scoring in 1986 and 1988.
Sherman played on Javelina teams that compiled a 34-12-0 record and won conference titles in 1985, 1987 and 1988. The 1988 Javelinas reached the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II post-season playoffs.
He played with the Philadelphia Eagles after concluding his career with the Javelinas.
Sherman is married and he and his wife, Beulah, are the parents of a daughter, Kristen Danielle.
