John Randle, from Hearne, was an All-American defensive lineman for the Javelinas in 1988 and 1989 and then went on to an All-Pro career in the National Football League. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1997.

In those two years, he was first-team All-America and helped guide the Javelinas into the NCAA Division II national playoffs twice. The team won Lone Star Conference titles both seasons. The Javelina standout was a two-time Lone Star Conference defensive player of the year and was selected to the LSC team of the decade for the 1980s.

In his two years with the team, the Javelinas had a 20-4-0 record and won two Lone Star Conference championships. The squad reached the NCAA Division II playoff semifinals in 1988 and was in the playoffs in 1989.

Randle had 14 sacks his senior year and had had 20 in his junior year. He averaged 5.3 tackles a game with the Javelinas.

In Randle’s senior season, the Javelinas captured the LSC total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and scoring defense titles, allowing 211.8 yards a game and 60.7 rushing yards a game. The Javelinas allowed the opponents 1.9 yards a carry on the ground.

He was signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Vikings in 1990 and played 14 seasons for the Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. He played in 183 consecutive NFL games. Randle was All-Pro seven times.

Randle has been inducted into the NCAA Division II Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame, the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is the third Javelina to be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame joining Gene Upshaw and Darrell Green.
