Gene Walkoviak was a quarterback for the football team in 1966-69. He played on teams that compiled a 35-8-0 record and won a national championship in 1969. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1994.

The Javelinas were national runners-up in 1968 and had an undefeated season in 1967.

The Javelinas captured Lone Star Conference titles in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

He was selected as the team’s most dedicated player in 1967, 1968 and 1969 and was an LSC player of the week honoree. He was voted the most valuable back in the 1968 NAIA national semifinal playoffs.

Walkoviak held the school record for most carries in a game (27) from 1967 until the mark was broken in 1976.

He was a captain of the 1969 national title team.

Walkoviak, who attended Houston St. Pius High School, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&I. He was president of the “T” Club, athletic lettermen’s association, his senior season.

He returned to his alma mater in 1974 and was an assistant football coach for three seasons and served as head track and field coach during the same period.

Before taking the coaching positions at Texas A&I, Walkoviak was an assistant at Mathis High School in 1970-71, was an assistant at Rice Consolidated in 1971-73 and was head football coach at Mathis in 1973-74.

After serving at Texas A&I for three seasons, he took the position of athletic director and head football coach at Jasper High School and he has had one of the top records in the state at the school.

The Jasper teams have compiled a 143-39-6 record under Walkoviak and have consistently ranked as one of the state’s top teams.

Walkoviak was selected as the newcomer of the year by the Jasper Chamber of Commerce in 1980, was named coach of the year in 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1986 and is a member of the Lions Club.

The Jasper City Council proclaimed a Gene Walkoviak Day in 1987.

He is the father of two daughters, Gina and Stacy, and a son, Bradley.
