Javelina Hall of Fame
LeRoy Fry was the first Javelina football player to make the Associated Press Little All-America team. He played in 1936-38 and graduated in 1939 with a degree in agriculture. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1973.
Fry attended H.M. King High School in Kingsville where he lettered in football, basketball and track.
As a Javelina, he led the nation in scoring in 1938 with 139 points and scored in every game but one. He had 21 touchdowns. Both of these stand as A&I season records.
He had 40 points in a 1938 game against National University of Mexico and scored six touchdowns. These are also school single-game records.
Fry carried 121 for 880 yards his senior year and averaged 6.9 yards a carry.
In addition to making All-America, he was on the Williamson All-America first team, the All-Alamo Conference first team and was a member of the “T” Association.
After finishing at A&I, he was selected to play in an all-star game in California, marking the first time an A&I player had been selected for such a game.
He served in the military in 1943-45 where he was a coach and physical training instructor. He was named to the All-Southwest Service All-Star team and played against the Brooklyn Dodgers professional team in Abilene.
Fry was a football and basketball official in 1940-49 and officiated the North-South All-Star game in Abilene in 1948.
Fry taught agriculture and managed the college farm at Abilene Christian in 1945-50 and received a life-time honorary membership in the Future Farmers of America. He was president of the West Texas Jersey Cattle Club in 1946-48 and is a member of the board of directors of the Texas Jersey Club.
He entered the insurance business in Harlingen in 1957 and has served as president of the Harlingen Quarterback Club, president of the West Harlingen Lions Club and has worked with the Little League baseball program.
Fry is affiliated with the American Founders Life Insurance Company in Harlingen.
Fry, who resides in Harlingen, is married to the former Margaret Jane Klein, an A&I graduate, and they have two sons and a daughter.
