Javelina Hall of Fame
Ron Hunt holds a bachelor’s and a master’s from Texas A&I, receiving his bachelor of science degree in 1963 and a master of science in 1968. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1999.
He also has a master’s degree in pastoral studies from Loyola (La.) University.
Hunt, from Corpus Christi, was a student trainer while an undergraduate at Texas A&I and became the head trainer in 1962. He held the position until 1981 when he moved to Midland as the head trainer and a teacher in the Midland Independent School District.
While at Texas A&I, Hunt was the first trainer to have an intern program that sent student trainers to smaller high schools in the area to help with their training needs. He also was the first to use female trainers for men’s and women’s programs, and had the first black student trainer at an integrated school in the state.
While in Kingsville, he had several trainers who went on to become trainers at colleges and high schools. Willie Gipson later became head trainer at Texas A&I and Al Shuford was the head trainer at Texas-Pan American.
He sponsored numerous clinics on athletic injuries in South Texas and was selected as the outstanding speaker at the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association 1970 convention.
Hunt was president of the St. Gertrude School board and served as a football and basketball official.
He was president of the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association in 1973 and was regional representative for the Texas Association of Health and Physical Education/Recreation Directors and the Texas Drivers’ Education Association in 1984-95. He was chair of the Texas A&I Federal Credit Union and chair of the Midland Teachers Credit Union.
Hunt served on the Texas A&I Faculty Senate.
He and his wife, Mary Louise, have two sons and two daughters, and six grandchildren.
