The 1991-92 Texas A&I men’s basketball team will be inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame Friday, Nov. 15 in the Memorial Student Union Building on the Texas A&M-Kingsville campus.

The squad, coached by Bill Carter, won the first-ever Lone Star Conference championship for the Javelina men’s basketball program and also was the first men’s basketball squad to advance into the NCAA Division II national playoffs.

The Javelinas completed the season with a 21-12 record on the year in Carter’s first at the helm of the Javelinas. Carter, who was assisted by Larry Gibson, guided the team to a 10-1 mark in the LSC.

After taking the LSC title on a last-second shot by guard Darryl Johnson, the Javelinas finished third in the South Central Region tournament. Kingsville beat Missouri Western, 97-83, in the third-place game. The Javelinas had dropped an 85-65 decision to host Washburn (Kan.) in the opening game.

Michael Robins, senior center from Paris, led the Javelina scoring in 1991-92 with 17 points a game, while shooting 56.4 percent from the floor. Robins was named the most valuable player in the LSC, was on the LSC all-tournament team and made the All-LSC first unit.

Kyle Roher, a senior guard from League City (Clear Lake), averaged 13.9 points a game with 80 3point baskets. Roher’s 80 three-point goals in 1991-92 ranks as the second best in a season and his .430 percentage from the outer stripe is the ninth best ever for a Javelina. The guard was on the NCAA Division II all-regional tournament team and was the most valuable player in the LSC postseason tournament. He also made the LSC all-academic team.

Sidney Days, a sophomore forward from Houston (Yates), added 11.6 a game. Days, who was the LSC’s Defensive Player of the Year, led the team in rebounding with an 8.1 average and Robins pulled down 7.7 a game. Days’ 31 blocked shots in 1991-92 is the second best total for a Javelina.

Carter was voted LSC coach of the year.

Carter and Robins have been inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame as individuals.
