Javelina Hall of Fame
Clarence Edward “Cal” Jewett served on the Javelina coaching staff in 1929-41 and the Javelinas had teams such as Arizona State, Baylor, Rice, San Jose (Calif.) State, Southern Methodist, Texas and Texas A&M on their schedule during the period. Jewett was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2005.
He was on the staff of Hall of Fame member Bud McCallum during each of his 13 seasons at Texas A&I.
The Javelinas won the Alamo Conference title in 1938.
In addition to his football duties, Jewett also coached basketball, tennis and track and field and was an instructor in the health and physical education department, and taught history and government.
Javelina Hall of Fame members who played while Jewett coached at Texas A&M are Stuart Clarkson, John Mark Dixon, Leroy Fry, Kenneth Grimes, W.L. “Dub” Harbin, Don Hightower, Robert Martin Hodgkiss, Clarence Jarvis, Francis Mattingly, Eugene McCormick, Johnny McNabb, Woodroe Petty, L.E. Ramey, Walter Reed, Robert Rich, Cliff Sadler and Gil Steinke.
After leaving Texas A&I, he was an accountant for Heldenfels Brothers, a machinist for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, supervisor at Gasoline Plant Construction Corp, and a hotel owner.
Jewett was a graduate of St. Edward’s and lettered in football in 1925-29. He was an All-Texas Conference guard in 1927 and 1929 and was chosen as one of the best collegiate guards in the nation by Spaulding football guide in 1929.
He served as secretary of his senior class, was vice president of the Illinois Club and was managing editor of the campus newspaper. He was a member of the yearbook staff and was secretary of the Glee Club for three years while a vested choir member.
He and his wife, Marie Agnes Rogers, are the parents of daughters Marie Bernice Jewett Hunt of Livermore, Colo., and Carol Jewett Andrews of Rockport, and a son, Clarence Edward Jewett of George West.
