The 1969 and 1970 Texas A&I track and field teams will be inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame Nov. 15 in the Memorial Student Union Building on campus.
They become the first track teams to be inducted. Several members of the two groups have been inducted as individuals.
The 1969 and 1970 squads won Lone Star Conference championships and were the only ones to take the league title until the 2014 team.
The 1969 team finished fourth in the NAIA national track and field meet and the 1970 unit didn’t participate in the national meet because of injuries to key members of the team.
In 1969, the Javelinas won 11 of the 17 events and outscored second-place Howard Payne, 81-46.
The championship race was closer in 1970 with the Javelinas getting two first places and 55 points. Southwest Texas State was second with 50 points.
The Javelina champions in 1969 were Dwight Harrison in the long jump and high jump, Earnest Haynes in the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes, Robert Gonzalez in the 880-yard and mile runs, Bob Daniels in the 120-yard hurdles, John Davenport in the 440-yard hurdles, Homer Martinez in the two-mile run and the 440-yard and mile relay units.
Running on the sprint relay were Harrison, Daniels, Haynes and David Hinojosa.
On the mile relay unit were Daniels, Hinojosa, Haynes and Jay James.
The lone individual winner in 1970 was Daniels in the hurdles and the 440-yard relay team with Daniels, Haynes, Hinojosa and Levi Johnson running legs.
Daniels was NAIA All-America in 1969 and broke the LSC record in the 120-yard hurdles.
Gonzalez broke the conference mile run record in 1969.
Haynes was the outstanding track athlete at the 1969 LSC meet and tied the conference record in the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes in 1969.
Davenport broke the LSC record in the 440-yard hurdles in 1969.
Javelina coach Ken Kelley was the LSC coach of the year in 1969 and 1970.
Members of the 1969 and 1970 squads were Daniels, Joseph Garza, Gonzalez, Harrison, Haynes, Hinojosa, Martinez, Tommy Watson and Dave Weathersby.
On the 1969 roster only were Tommy Argubright, Frank Bacy, Leon Bernsen, Dale Cramer, Davenport, Ronald Fielding, Jimmy Grissom, Abel Gutierrez, James, John Perme, Steve Stewart, Dan Swan, Donald Washington and Aaron Williams.
Members of the 1970 squad only were Phelan Allee, Joe Bravenec, Charles Canales, Levi Johnson, James Motz, William O’Connor and Bob Tumlinson.
Athletes on the 1969 and 1970 track and field teams who are members of the Javelina Hall of Fame are Allee, Argubright, Fielding, Johnson, Gonzalez, Harrison, Haynes, Martinez, Price, Washington, Kelley, trainer Ron Hunt and sports information director Fred Nuesch.
