Javelina Hall of Fame
Hughie Shaw was a two-sport standout with the Javelinas. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1999.
From Austin and Manor High School, he played on Javelina teams that won three national titles and four Lone Star Conference championships. The Javelinas were 46-1-1 during his career.
He was a running back and played in a backfield that is considered one of the best ever in collegiate football.
Shaw was also a standout in track and field, winning the Lone Star Conference 100-yard and 220-yard dash titles in 1977, and claiming the LSC Most Valuable Track Performer Award. He ran a leg on the conference champion 440-yard relay teams in 1976 and 1977.
Shaw’s four gold medals in the LSC place him fifth among Javelina athletes in conference first places.
Shaw served as a dorm supervisor at the Travis State School from 1980-90 and is currently recreation director for the Marbridge Foundation, a living center for mildly retarded and mildly handicapped citizens.
Shaw was the Texas Special Olympics coach of the year in 1994 and 1997, and had four state softball championship teams, two state basketball title squads, coached two tennis champions and had a silver medalist in the World Games.
