Javelina Hall of Fame
The 1995-96 men’s basketball team went 23-6 overall en route to earning the Lone Star Conference championship and competing in the NCAA Division II tournament. DeRon Rutledge was named All-American, All-South Central Region, South Central Region All-Tournament, LSC All-Tournament Team and LSC Most Valuable Player. Current Javelina head coach Johnny Estelle was the Most Valuable Player in the LSC Tournament and a second team all-conference honoree, and Chris Walker was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Year. A threat from behind-the-arc, the team holds the school record for most three-pointers in a season with 227 and Estelle set the record for most triples in a game with nine versus Central Oklahoma (March 2, 1996). That season, Rutledge scored 619 points, sixth most in single season school history and shot an astonishing 62.3 percent from the floor (fourth best). Estelle’s 78 three-pointers were second most at that point and now third most in a single season, four more than teammate Michael Riggs. Tito Olivarez connected on 50 percent of his shots from long distance, second best in Javelina single season history. Rutledge pulled down 311 rebounds that year, fourth most, averaging a double-double with 10.7 boards per contest. A menace defensively, Estelle set the school record with 88 steals and Riggs added 60, which at that point, was second most in a single season.
Other members of the team were Kevin Davis, Mike Dominguez, Brendon DuBose, Kevin Howard, Benjamin Kang, Chris Lowery, Richard Perry, James Robinson, Michael Webb, Lamont West, Brian White and Des Stewart. The head coach was Bill Carter, who was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2013 as the leader of the 1991-92 squad. Darrell Pattillo and Gilbert Belmontes were coaching assistants.
