Javelina Hall of Fame
Francis "Sacks" Mattingly was an offensive back and a record-setting punter for the Javelina football squad in the late 1930s. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1987.
Mattingly, who is deceased, was a fullback and played on Javelina teams that met Texas, Texas A&M, Rice, Baylor and Southern Methodist. Writers called him “one of the best backs in the state”.
He made All-Alamo Conference and went on to play for the Chicago Bears. A native of Beeville, Mattingly coached at Pettus High School after receiving his degree.
He held a number of Javelina punt records until recently.
His Hall of Fame award was accepted by his wife, Faith.
