Javelina Hall of Fame
DeRon Rutledge was a member of the Javelina basketball team in 1994-95 and 1995-96. In those two seasons, the Javelinas compiled a 42-11 record, won a Lone Star Conference championship and took third place in the NCAA Division II South Central Region playoffs. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2006.
He scored 619 points in his senior season and had 610 his junior year. They rank as the sixth and seventh most points for a player in a season.
Rutledge was NCAA Division II All-America as well as All-South Central Region and All-South Central Region tournament. He was All-LSC first team in each of his seasons with the Javelinas.
He was the LSC’s most valuable player in 1995-96 and was selected to the LSC all-tournament lineup.
After finishing at TAMUK, he played two seasons in England, averaging 21 points and 16.1 points per game in the two years. He was with Burucaramango in Colombia in 1998 before signing with Dakota of the International Basketball Association where he played for one season. He averaged 27 points and 13.6 rebounds for Dakota.
Rutledge played in Venezuela in 1999 and then was in Spain and Mexico before returning to Dakota in 2000 where he averaged 20.8 points and 9.4 rebounds a game.
He played for the Florida Sea Dragons of the U.S. Basketball League in 2001 and then returned to England where he averaged 23 points and six rebounds a game for the Scottish Rocks.
Rutledge was with Birmingham, England, in 2003-04 and averaged 23.1 points and 10.9 rebounds.
The Javelina product returned to the U.S. in 2004-05 and played with the Texas Tycoons of Fort Worth and averaged 18.2 points and 8.2 rebounds a game.
He was with the Buffalo Silverbacks of the American Basketball Association last winter and will return to the team this year.
Rutledge was an IBA All-Star in 1999 and 2001 and played on the league title team in 2001. He made the ABA All-Star game in 2005.
Rutledge, from Houston (Mt.Carmel), is the son of Pat Fears of Houston.
