Ruben Cantu, who has been a member of the Texas A&I and Texas A&M- Kingsville athletic staff for the last 21 years, was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2008.
Cantu is an associate athletic director and serves as the head athletic trainer. As a part of his position, he is in charge of the athletic facilities.
He had been an intern at Trinity Valley Community College in 1986 and he was the head trainer at Copperas Cove High School a year before joining the Javelina staff.
Cantu is a member of the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association and is an associate member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. He has membership in the College Athletic Trainers Society.
Cantu has served on several University committees and is a member of the American Red Cross.
He has supervised more than 30 former students who have become head trainers at high schools.
A native of Mercedes, Cantu attended South Garland High School in Garland.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Baylor where he served as a student trainer in football and baseball. He received his master’s degree in education mid-management from Texas A&I in 1988.
Cantu is married to the former Reili Liiva of Estonia.
