Javelina Hall of Fame
Robert Gonzalez was one of the nation’s top distance runners while in high school in Falfurrias and a teammate of Javelina Hall of Famer Homer Martinez. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1981.
While with the Javelinas, Gonzalez made the 1969 All-America team and was all-conference in 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972. He won the LSC title in the 880-yard and mile runs in 1969 and took the 880 title in 1970.
Gonzalez led the team in scoring in 1970 and was named to the A&I Track Team of the Decade for the 1970s in the 880 and mile. He still holds the all-time best performance in the LSC in the mile (4:07.3) and had the best time in the 880 for years. He also holds several school marks in the 880 and mile and was on the two-mile, sprint medley and distance medley relay teams that set school marks that still stand.
Gonzalez was on the 1969 and 1970 Javelina teams that won LSC championships.
After finishing at Texas A&I, Gonzalez became a high school track and field coach.
