Javelina Hall of Fame
John Barefield was a defensive lineman for the Javelinas in 1974-77, one of the most successful eras ever for a college team. The Javelinas won three national championships, four Lone Star Conference titles and compiled a 46-1-1 record during his collegiate career. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1999.
The team had a 42-game victory streak during the period and this still stands as the second longest in college football history.
Barefield, from Victoria and Stroman High School, was an All-America honoree, making the American Football Coaches Association All-America first unit, and the Associated Press’ Little All-America and NAIA All-America second units his senior season.
He was All-Lone Star Conference first team for three consecutive seasons and made NAIA All-District for three straight seasons.
Barefield was selected as the most valuable lineman in the NAIA semifinal game in 1975.
The Javelina standout was a second round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals after concluding his college career. While in St. Louis, he received a citation from the city after reviving a man who had had a heart attack while driving on a freeway.
He later played with the San Antonio Gunslingers of the USFL.
Barefield currently resides in Lakewood, Colo. He and his wife, Elizabeth Ranson, are the parents of three girls and a boy.
