Javelina Hall of Fame
Bud McCallum served as the head football coach for the Javelinas in 1929-41. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2003.
McCallum was the head coach of the Javelina football team in 1929 through 1941 when the program was suspended for World War II. He had been a high school and junior college coach in Wichita Falls before taking the position at Texas A&I. He was considered the first full-time head coach for the Javelinas.
McCallum had played at the University of Texas and was an All-Southwestern end.
His teams had a 70-34-9 record. His 1934 squad battled Texas A&M to a 14-14 tie and in 1940 went to California where it upset nationally ranked San Jose State, 10-0. San Jose was coached by Pop Warner.
The 1941 Javelina squad had an 8-2 record and one of the victories was over Arizona State.
McCallum’s teams won Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in 1933 and 1934 and took Alamo Conference titles or shares in 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1941.
He produced several of the Javelinas’ all-time great players including All-American halftime Leroy Fry; Little All-American center and Chicago Bear player Stuart Clarkson, and former Javelina athletic director and football coaching legend Gil Steinke.
More than a dozen of his players are in the Javelina Hall of Fame.
