Javelina Hall of Fame
Dick Watson lettered three years in track and field for the Javelinas and was a team captain. He was a one-year letterman in football and played on the 1959 NAIA national championship team. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1974.
He was a member of the “T” Association, won eight gold medals in Lone Star Conference competition (still a high for an A&I athlete), was Texas AAU champion in the hurdles in 1960, was NAIA national champion in the 400-meter hurdle race in 1960 and was a student assistant coach in football in 1960.
Watson still holds the A&I records in the 440-yard hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. His winning time in the NAIA national meet still stands as one of the best performances in the event.
Watson received his degree from A&I in 1961 and currently is in real estate in Kingsville.
He is the father of four daughters.
