Javelina Hall of Fame
Al Matthews was an All-American defensive back for the Javelina football team and also participated in track and field. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1985.
He was on the NAIA All-America first team in 1969 and also made the All-Lone Star Conference team. He was on the LSC and Texas A&I teams of the decade for the 1960s.
He was on LSC championship teams in 1967, 1968 and 1969, and the squads that captured the national title in 1969 and finished second in 1968.
Matthews was a second round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers and was selected to play in the College All-Star game in Chicago after his senior season. He was in the professional ranks for eight years, six with Green Bay, one at Seattle and one in San Francisco.
Matthews lettered one season as a sprinter in track.
He was vice president of the Student Council at Texas A&I.
He coached four years at Austin High School in Austin, his alma mater, and was the first black coach on the University of Texas staff while in that program. He was named an Outstanding Young Men of America honoree.
Matthews served on the executive committee of the National Football League Players Association for three seasons, and was a player representative for five years.
Matthews resides in Austin.
