KINGSVILLE, Texas – A three-game sweep of the second-ranked A&M-Commerce Lions headlined the weekend of Texas A&M-Kingsville athletics as freshman
Saidi Castillo (Kingsville, Texas) anchored the Javelina lineup and had a hand in all three of the softball program's wins over TAMUC to grab her third IBC Bank Player of the Week honor.
For the men's programs, junior
John Mouton (Missouri City, Texas) averaged a team-best 17 points per game in the two losses to Cameron and MSU Texas on a .545 clip to take home his second accolade of the season.
Castillo had a piece of all three Javelina victories during the sweep at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field. On Friday night she collected 15 strikeouts and allowed only three hits and one earned run in a complete game victory over the Lions.
The Kingsville, Texas, native added a save of the frontend of Saturday's doublehader after recording the last four outs in a 10-7 win, and came back to start the backend before coming away with one run allowed in four innings for a 3-1 triumph. She held TAMUC to a .136 average in 12 and 1/3 innings pitched while striking out 19 to move her record to 11-1 alongside 94 strikeouts on the season.
For her efforts, Castillo added her second Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week selection and the Javelinas were rewarded as a team with the No. 15 ranking in the NFCA poll.
On the hardwood, Mouton put away 22 points in a 65-61 loss to Cameron last Thursday on 7-for-14 shooting from the floor as he added four rebounds to his total. He followed up with 12 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal in the hard-fought 69-68 loss to MSU Texas to close out the regular season for the Javelinas.
On the year, the Missouri City, Texas, native averaged eight points and 4.2 rebounds per game on a .379 clip from the floor and ended up with nine contests scoring in double figures with his 22-point performance against the Aggies serving as the season high.
The Javelina men's basketball team will take on Angelo State to start the LSC Championships, while the softball team will hit the road for seven games in Oklahoma.
