KINGSVILLE, Texas – Another dominant showing from a pair of standout student-athletes punctuated the previous week for both the Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field, and women's basketball programs, with redshirt senior
Richard Cervantes (Mission, Texas) and junior
Brynae Thompson (Houston, Texas) both taking home the 22nd iteration of the IBC Bank Player of the Week awards.
Cervantes posted a pair of provisional marks for the Javelina track and field program at the McNeese State Indoor II last week. The Mission, Texas, native heaved the shot put to the 17.51 meter (62-1) mark on his fifth attempt to snatch the top spot away from Shaquille Singuineau from UL-Lafayette.
The Sharyland H.S. product also came away with the gold medal in the weight throw as his third attempt landed 18.67 meters (61-3) away from the ring to collect his second NCAA Provisional Qualifying standard of the weekend.
On the year, Cervantes has eclipsed the provo standard on three separate occasions in the shot put, twice in the weight throw.
For Javelina women's basketball, Thompson's torrid scoring pace over the previous seven games catapulted her to the top spot in the Lone Star Conference as she now averages 16.8 points per game in the 2018-19 campaign.
The Houston native came away with 22 points in TAMUK's 71-67 win over MSU Texas and added 24 points in the loss to Cameron. She now has seven games on the year with at least 20 points, more than the Blue and Gold had as a team during the entire 2017-18 season.
Over the previous seven games, Thompson is averaging 21.7 points and has shot 47-for-109 (.432) over the span.
The Javelina track and field program will split up once again to cover two separate events, with a handful of competitors heading to Joplin, Mo., for the MSSU Lion Open, while others will head to Houston to compete in the FasTrak Athletix Collegiate Open. The women's basketball program opens up the second half of conference play with a pair of contests against A&M-Commerce and Tarleton starting on Thursday, January 31.
