KINGSVILLE, Texas – A clean weekend sweep between Texas A&M-Kingsville football and volleyball programs resulted in seniors
Nick Pelrean (Houston, Texas) and
Haley Hutchinson (Georgetown, Texas) taking home the third iteration of the IBC Bank Players of the Week award.
The award is given weekly to the top men's and women's performer of the previous week across all actively competing programs in the TAMUK athletic department.
Hutchinson led a stifling Javelina volleyball defense that held Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin to a sub-.210 hit percentage last week. The Blue and Gold turned in a five-set win over the Mustangs before closing the first weekend of LSC play with a sweep of the Falcons.
The Georgetown, Texas, native totaled 17 blocks between the two matches, first with 10 blocks in the five-set win over WNMU before racking up another seven against UTPB. Hutchinson also added 13 blocks on a .265 clip in the two games to move the Javelinas to 7-3 on the year with a 2-0 mark in the Lone Star Conference.
For the Hogs, Pelrean put away two scores in a dominant 52-10 showing against Texas Wesleyan in the 2018 football home opener. The Houston native capped off a five-play, 48-yard drive with a six yard rush in the first TAMUK drive before breaking away for a 65-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cement the Javelinas' total at 52.
Pelrean was part of the Javelina backfield by committee that totaled five touchdowns and 333 yards on 41 carries between four running backs. Senior
Jeff Carr (Temple, Texas) added 93 yards and a score, newcomer
Josh Oglesby (Katy, Texas) put away 89 yards on 15 carries and senior
Luis Lopez (San Diego, Texas) bulldozed his way to 40 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Javelina volleyball program will head out on the road this weekend to tackle Texas Women's and A&M-Commerce for the second week of conference play on Sept. 14-15, while the Hog football program visits San Angelo, Texas, to take on Angelo State on Sept. 15 with kickoff at 6 p.m.
