KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis and football programs turned in a busy weekend for Javelina athletics as the redshirt-senior duo of
Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas) and
Devonte Williams (Houston, Texas) were named the IBC Bank Players of the Week for the fourth rendition of the award.
The award is given weekly to the top men's and women's performer of the previous week across all actively competing programs in the TAMUK athletic department.
Carvajal led the women's tennis team at the Contender CrossFit Open in Corpus Christi, Texas, over the weekend as she took second in both the Dolphin doubles draw and the Wave singles draw on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The McAllen, Texas, native paired up with newcomer
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) in the doubles portion of the open and cruised through tandems from UTRGV and UTSA in the first day to advance to the championship match of the draw.
Carvajal and Donkor took on Marina Rodriguez Garcia and Ai Noa Fabre from Louisiana on Sunday but fell at 6-4 to close their run in the doubles portion.
In the singles draw, Carvajal bested UTRGV's Nethmi Waduge at 8-6 in the first round and overcame L. Sola from Lamar at 8-5 in the second round, but took second after dropping an 8-4 decision to TAMUCC's Mariya Shumeika to end the weekend of play.
For Javelina football, Williams led the Hog defense with 10 tackles, two for loss, to go with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in the 30-14 loss to Angelo State.
Williams forced the fumble from ASU's Payne Sullins midway through the first quarter and fell on the loose ball for the Blue and Gold, and also knocked the rock loose from Tyrese Nathan later in the frame for his second takeaway of the game.
The TAMUK tennis program will host it's first-ever Javelina quad on September 21-22 when St. Edward's and St. Mary's (TX) come to town. The football program, in the meantime, will host LSC foe Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, September 22, at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT.
