Brynae Thompson (Houston, Texas) headlined the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program's Lone Star Conference win over Texas Woman's on Saturday at the SPEC.
For the men, freshman
Darius Mickens (Willis, Texas) lead the Javelinas in a hard-fought loss to Angelo State to resume the LSC schedule. As a result, both Mickens and Thompson were named IBC Bank Players of the Week for the first week of the 2019 calendar year.
Thompson put away 28 points in a 72-70 win over the Pioneers as her play was crucial down the stretch in securing the decision. The Houston native took the ball down the length of the court with 30 seconds to play in the fourth quarter and broke the 69-69 tie with a successful and-one following a contested layup in the paint. The Ranger College transfer finished 10-for-18 from the floor, surpassing her previous best of 25 set back on February 10, 2018, in an 81-78 loss to A&M-Commerce. Thompson also sank eight shots from the charity stripe in the win, to go with four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
One the year, the Cy-Fair H.S. product is currently leading the team with a 14.6 scoring average on a .476 clip, adding a .702 mark from the line, three rebounds per contests and has totaled seven assists and 11 steals through 11 games. She was the leading scorer in eight separate contests for the Blue and Gold and is currently eighth in the LSC in scoring and sixth in field goal percentage.
Mickens, meanwhile, totaled 13 points and three rebounds to lead the Javelinas in a 75-65 loss to the Rams. The true freshman with 6-for-12 from the field, pocketed three steals and added two assists before leaving the game with five fouls.
On the year, the Willis, Texas, native is second on the team with 7.1 points per outing on a .517 clip, adding 2.7 rebounds per game alongside 20 assists, 17 steals and seven blocks.
Both the TAMUK men's and women's basketball programs will square off with top-ranked West Texas A&M on Thursday, January 10, before taking on Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, January 12.
