Hendrix and North named IBC Bank Players of the Week

Hendrix tallied 15 tackles for the football program; North paced the volleyball program to a 3-2 record during the week

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville football and volleyball programs turned in the IBC Bank Players of the Week for the fifth iteration of the award, as senior Payton Hendrix (Dallas, Texas) and freshman Emily North (Red Oak, Texas) took home the honors this week for the Javelinas.

On the gridiron, Hendrix tallied 15 tackles for the Hogs, nine solo, to lead the defensive effort in the 31-14 loss to Eastern New Mexico.

On the season so far, the Dallas native has 31 tackles to his name, 16 solo and one for loss, as he anchors the Javelina secondary that has held opponents to 152.5 yards per game. As a unit, the defensive backfield for the Hogs has intercepted five passes, including one returned for a touchdown in a 52-10 win over Texas Wesleyan to open the home portion of the schedule.

On the court, North helped guide the Javelina offense that turned in a .182 clip in the three wins over the past weekend. TAMUK went 3-2 with wins against St. Mary's (TX) and St. Edward's while coming up short in losses to Angelo State and No. 20 Tarleton.

North put up double-digit assists in all five matches on the week and has reached the double-digit plateau in helpers in all 17 of the Blue and Gold's matches in 2018. The Red Oak, Texas, native tallied 14 in the three-set win over the Rattlers in Kingsville to begin the week, added 30 in a five-set thriller against St. Edward's, tallied 20 and 24 against Angelo State and Tarleton, respectively, and closed her week with a season-high 48 in a five-set win over StMU.

On the year, North has 413 assists to her name as part of a primarily 5-2 offensive look for the Javelinas, good for 6.35 per set in only her first year at TAMUK. She also has 123 total digs as she put away a season-best 12 each against the Hilltoppers and Rattlers.

The Javelina football program remains in Kingsville this week for their second of four straight home games when they host New Mexico Highlands for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium on September 28. The TAMUK volleyball program also returns home this week to take on West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico for LSC play. The Blue and Gold will take on the Lady Buffs on September 28 starting at 7 p.m., before facing the Greyhounds on September 29.
