KINGSVILLE, Texas – Following a strong performance over the weekend for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's golf and football programs, sophomore
Kristina Gutierrez (Laredo, Texas) and senior
Nick Pelrean (Houston, Texas) were named the IBC Bank Players of the Week for the 10th iteration of the honor of the 2018-19 season.
Gutierrez took home her first award of the year after pacing the Javelina golf program to a seventh-place finish at the Skyhawk Women's Fall Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., last week as she conquered the course with a five-under 141 through 36 holes to claim the individual title.
The individual tournament championship is the first-ever for the Javelinas under the tutelage of head coach
Stefanie Gray and it also stands as the lowest 36-hole score in her tenure at Kingsville.
Gutierrez was honored by the Lone Star Conference last week as she was named the LSC Women's Golfer of the Week for her performance. The Laredo, Texas, native went into the clubhouse on the first day of the tournament with a one-under 72 at the University of New Mexico Championship Course after collecting four birdies on the day.
She finished the second day of competition with a five-under 69 on the heels of an eagle on the 10th hole and a total of four birdies from the rest of the day to take home the crown.
For the football program, Pelrean piled up a season-high 153 yards on the ground in the Hogs' 37-34 win over Western New Mexico on homecoming and added one touchdown to put TAMUK ahead for good.
Pelrean broke off a 62-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to give the hosts a 16-14 lead at the 9:19 mark of the second quarter for his fifth touchdown of the year on the ground.
For the season, the Houston native has a team-high 574 rushing yards and five scores with a long rush of 69 yards. He also broke the 100-yard mark on the ground in TAMUK's 52-10 win over Texas Wesleyan to take home his first IBC Player of the Week award and is now tied with teammate
Koy Detmer Jr. (Somerset, Texas) for most honors on the men's side with two in 2018-19.
The Javelina golf program is officially done with the 2018 fall schedule and will resume play in the spring. On the football field, the Hogs will hit the road this weekend for the final road contest of the year as they take on West Texas A&M on Saturday, Nov. 3, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT in Canyon, Texas.
