Charles and Somoye grab IBC Bank Player of the Week honors following Indoor Championships

Charles posts 12th-highest heptathlon score in NCAA D-II history; Somoye places first in weight throw

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Following the 2019 Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, the Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program had yet another pair of standout performers at the penultimate meet of the season as freshman Valentin Charles (Rennes, France) and senior Racheal Somoye (Houston, Texas) were named IBC Bank Players of the week at the quarter century mark.

Charles posted the 12th-highest heptathlon score in NCAA Division-II history on his way to the top spot on the podium. The Rennes, France, native compiled a final of 5493 in the multi event to finish first at the LSC Championships for his second automatic qualifying mark of the season.

The Lyceé Sévigné product remains alone atop the NCAA descending order list in the heptathlon with his sixth-highest score in the MSSU Lion Open meet on Feb. 1-2 with a total of 5544 following the competition.

Somoye, meanwhile, took first in the weight throw for the second time in her career with a toss of 19.20 meters (63-0) to set a new meet record in the event. The Houston native surpassed the previous mark of 17.42m (57-2) held by Hailey Womack from A&M-Commerce.

The Alief Taylor H.S. product currently sits seventh on the descending order list in the NCAA as she reached a distance of 19.32m (63-4.75) at the Crimson & Gold Invitational to start the indoor campaign.

The Javelinas are off until the NCAA Indoor Championships set for March 8-9. The national meet will be hosted by Pittsburg State at the Robert W. Plaster Center, a location the Blue and Gold will return to for the third time this year.
