KINGSVILLE, Texas – A solid weekend on the diamond for the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program became a four-game sweep over Missouri-St. Louis, while the women's tennis program had a lone holdout stave off a sweep from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday for the first home match of 2019.
Sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) led the Hogs with a .438 average on seven hits in 16 at bats, compiled seven RBI, one double and one triple in the process, while junior
Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) extended her unbeaten singles streak in the dual season to 18 straight dating back to 2018 with a three-set win over Myu Kageyama.
Thanks to their performances, both have been named IBC Bank Players of the Week for the first time in the 2018-19 season.
Servin had three multi-hit contests in the four-game sweep over the Tritons for the Javelina baseball program. He put away two in the first game alongside two RBI and a double, before he added two more in game three with one run, one RBI and a stolen base.
The Edinburg, Texas, native closed the series with three hits, four RBI and two runs to go with one triple in the series' finale to spearhead a 17-0 win. Following the weekend, he raised his average to .383, second-best on the team, with 18 hits, 14 RBI and a .468 slugging percentage.
For the women's tennis program, Ruiz dropped the first set at 7-6 to Kageyama before claiming the second set at 6-3. The San Antonio native battled back from a 6-2 deficit in the super tiebreaker set and eventually knotted the score at 8-8 before coming away with the win at 10-8.
The streak for Ruiz in the dual season dates back to March 13, 2018, when she bested Linying Xiao from MSU Denver in three sets. The win over Kageyama on Sunday marks the second Division-I opponent she has bested in the run as she also downed Eli Arnaudova from New Mexico State in straight sets back on March 21, 2018.
Throughout the streak, Ruiz has only had four matches go to three sets, with the first four wins in 2019 coming in straight sets before the matchup to Kageyama went to a third.
Both the Javelina baseball and women's tennis program will have the week off. The baseball team will return to the diamond on March 5 for one game against St. Edwards prior to the four-game series against Angelo State beginning on Friday, March 8. The women's tennis team will return to action on Saturday, March 9, for a match against regional foe St. Edward's in Austin, Texas.
