Javelinas Sweep Steers In Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelina baseball team swept the Texas College Steers in Saturday's doubleheader 8-2 in the opener and 14-0 in game two at Nolan Ryan Field sweeping the three-game series.

With the series sweep, the Javelinas move to 5-3 on the season heading into the start of Lone Star Conference play next weekend at West Texas A&M. Texas College is now 5-8 on the season.

In game one, the Javelinas trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth when they crossed the plate four times. Matt Perez led off the inning with a double to right-center field and scored on a single by Ryan Guedry. Guedry went to second on a single to center by Blake Johnson.

With two away, Guedry scored when Travis Laird reached on an infield error. Johnson and Laird made it 4-1 as they scored when Derrick Walls reached on an error in center field.

After scoring an unearned run in the fifth, Perez started a 3-run seventh when he reached on a 1-out walk. Jimmy Roche followed suit by reaching on a second straight walk. Justin Lee came off the bench to load the bases with a single. Julian Duran would clear the bases with a single to right. He picked up a pair of RBI on the play while Lee scored on an error in the outfield.

The Steers second run came in the top of the ninth.

Taylor Taska earned his first win of the season in his first start. He scattered four hits over six innings allowing one earned run. He had four strikeouts and two walks. Denver Diefenbach and Ryan Benitez each tossed a scoreless inning, while Hayden James allowed a run in the ninth.

Tyler Seibert fell to 1-1 allowing five runs with one earned in five innings to suffer the loss.

In game two, the Javelinas scored runs in five innings as they rolled to a 14-0 victory. It was the team's highest run total and second shutout of the season.

Kingsville recorded 18 hits in the game scoring twice in the second, four times in the fifth and five times in the sixth. The Hoggies added two more in the seventh with the 14th run coming in the eighth.

Taylor Taska and Julian Duran led Kingsville at the plate as each drove in three runs. Taska was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in including a 3-run home run in the sixth. It was his team-leading third home run of the season. Duran was 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base.

Five other Javelinas drove in at least one run and three others had two-or-more hits. Lee was 3-of-4, while Dustin Aguilar and Walls each had two hits in the win.

Dallas Ponder was the main beneficiary of the run support as he moved to 2-1. He fanned six batters while scattering four hits in six innings. Three relievers – Cody Williams, Dustin Luna and Ryan Scott, followed tossing an inning apiece without allowing a hit.

Lew Caradonna suffered his first loss of the season as he was charged with runs.
