KINGSVILLE, Texas - For the first time since the NCAA brought the spring schedule to a halt in March, the Texas A&M-Kingsville football program took to the gridiron at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium for fall practice as first-year head coach
Mike Salinas eyes the upcoming spring slate for the Hogs. Salinas was named the
12th head coach in program history on December 20, 2019, before his
introductory press conference on January 6, 2020.
The Javelinas ended the 2019 campaign with a 2-9 record, 1-7 in Lone Star Conference contests. Highlights from the year include a
22-tackle performance from
Tre'Michael Tutt against Eastern New Mexico on September 28 which broke a 35-year-old school record first set in 1984 and matched in 1995, while
Donte Ross ran back the first punt return touchdown in a nearly a decade for 48 yards.
Koy Detmer Jr., now filling in on the coaching staff for Salinas, became the
third Javelina ever to throw for over 400 yards in a single game as he finished with 450 in a hard-fought loss to No. 4/5 Tarleton on October 26.
Detmer Jr.'s performance against the Texans was seven yards shy of the program record set back in 2001 by Abel Gonzalez, but he managed to tie the record for most pass attempts in a game with 65 and broke the record for most pass completions with 37 in the loss.
A total of
12 student-athletes were named to the All-LSC teams, headlined by
Darrian Hambrick and
Kyle Williams on the All-LSC second team. Williams later went on to be named
Don Hansen All-Super Region IV second team for his efforts as the 11th Javelina to be named to the All-Super Region teams in the past five seasons.
Salinas' first move as the head coach of Javelina Football was the addition of
four assistant coaches who joined the ranks in early January, followed by the signing of
46 student-athletes for 2020 National Signing Day on February 6.
The 2021 spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
