KINGSVILLE, Texas – Senior
Koy Detmer Jr. (Somerset, Texas) reached a milestone that had not occurred at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium in nearly seven years on Saturday in a Lone Star Conference matchup against No. 4/5 Tarleton as he threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns in the 45-33 loss on Homecoming presented by Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg.

Detmer Jr. fell seven yards shy of tying the program record set by Abel Gonzalez in a 37-32 NCAA First Round loss to UC Davis on November 17, 2001, but in doing so became just the third member of the Blue and Gold to throw for over 400 yards in a single game. The last Hog to reach that mark was Bryan Ehrlich, who did so twice in the 2012 campaign, first for 415 yards in a 45-28 loss to No. 15 Midwestern State on September 22 in Kingsville and second for 418 yards in a 45-38 Kanza Bowl loss to Emporia State on November 25 in Topeka, Kan.
The transfer from BYU went 37-for-65 through the air to go with his three scores. He broke the program record for single-game completions and tied the record for pass attempts, both of which were set by Ehrlich in the game against Emporia State in 2012.
Despite his performance, the Javelinas (1-7, 0-5 LSC) struck first against the Texans (8-0, 6-0 LSC) but soon fell behind on three scoring drives from the visitors in the second quarter and never recovered en route to the loss.
TAMUK started the scoring with a 29-yard field goal from freshman
Romario Perez (Corpus Christi, Texas) just past the 10-minute mark of the opening stanza. TSU had the quick response as Ben Holmes connected with Zimari Manning for a 49-yard touchdown pass less than a minute later to put the Hogs in a 7-3 deficit going into the second.
The hosts had the response ready on their first drive of the second quarter as Detmer Jr. found redshirt junior
Alan Smith (Humble, Texas) for 15 yards with 10:10 showing on the clock for a 10-7 Blue and Gold lead. Unfortunately, the Texans rattled off 17-unanswered points over the next six minutes to flip the script as Daniel McCants ignited the run with a 59-yard dash to put TSU back ahead.
TAMUK tacked on three more points with a 30-yard boot from Perez at the end of the first half, but Tarleton provided the other bookend coming out of the break with a 56-yard run from McCants. McCants finished with 250 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries by the end of the game for TSU.
The Javelinas matched the Texans from there as Detmer Jr. stuck redshirt junior
Darrian Hambrick (Nashville, Tenn.) for 12 yards on the next possession to cap off a 75-yard drive for the hosts. Tarleton added a 77-yard touchdown pass from Holmes to Manning on the next play from scrimmage to keep the cushion, but a one-yard dive from redshirt senior
Luis Lopez (San Diego, Texas) kept TAMUK within striking distance.
A 27-yard run from McCants midway through the fourth quarter started what proved to be a crucial series of events for both teams as his touchdown with 7:44 remaining in the game put the Texans up 45-27. The ensuing kickoff was recovered by TSU off a short pooch kick and the next 2:22 of game time was subsequently ran off by the visitors before TAMUK got the ball back.
The next Javelina drive stalled out after five plays and another 1:36 was wiped off by Tarleton before the Hogs got possession with 2:28 remaining in the game. Detmer Jr. ended the drive by finding classmate
Devin Milburn (Galveston, Texas) for five yards with 1:23 left on the clock, but the following on-side kick went in favor of the Texans that finalized the score at 45-33.
Hambrick led the receiving corps with 151 yards on 12 catches, his new personal best. Milburn, meanwhile, added 117 yards on 11 grabs as the duo both brought in a touchdown.
In total, 10 different Javelinas caught a pass from Detmer Jr. on the evening.
The Hogs will head back out on the road next week for a conference match against Western New Mexico on Saturday, November 2.
