ARLINGTON, Texas (Tennis) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (13-10) picked up a 5-1 win over fifth seed University of Texas of the Permian Basin (6-14) before being knocked out in the semifinals, 5-0 by #15 Midwestern State University (20-4) on Friday at the Arlington Tennis Center.
QUARTERFINALS vs. UT Permian Basin
The Javelinas struck first in the second doubles flight when Tabata Lua and Lisa Carvajal (10-6) defeated Krissy Chavez and Sofia Ochoa Arminana, 8-2. Erika Larrea and Viviana Ortiz (12-6) followed suit with an 8-3 victory against Andrea Villalobos and Stephanie Prats, but a tight match in the top flight went in favor of the Falcons 8-6 to avoid being swept in doubles. That would be their only win however as TAMUK ran away with the match in singles play, starting with a 6-2, 6-1 win from Carvajal (10-8 this spring) in the first flight. Julia Rauer (13-7)handled Ochoa Arminana in flight No. 4 (6-1, 6-0) and Larrea (12-3) blanked Paulina Obreque in No. 6 to make the match final, 5-1.
SEMIFINALS vs. Midwestern State
Texas A&M-Kingsville fought but the Mustangs quick 3-0 start to the matched was hard to overcome. MSU won singles flight two and three to sweep the match and advance to the conference championship match tomorrow.
The Hogs leave the conference tournament with a 13-10 record overall and matches the a program season-high of 13 wins (13-11 in 2015 season).
