Kingsville - The Texas A&M-Kingsville Athletics Department announced today that it will discontinue the women's tennis program effective immediately.
The decision follows a thorough review by the athletics department of the short-term and long-term sustainability of each athletic program. The immediate action gives the athletic department the flexibility to focus its resources on the institution's 13 NCAA DII sports programs, ensuring their long-term resilience and success. The university is currently evaluating the potential addition of future athletic programs that would expand opportunities for students while advancing the department's strategic goals.Â
"Decisions like this are incredibly difficult and made with a heavy heart," said Executive Director of Athletics Michael Salinas. "This was a strategic decision for both the department and the University and is in no way a reflection of our tennis student-athletes, coaches, or supporters. Our coaches and student-athletes have represented Texas A&M University-Kingsville with tremendous pride, integrity, and resilience, and we deeply value their contributions to the program and the University. We are truly appreciative of all they have given and remain fully committed to supporting them during this challenging time."
All existing scholarship agreements with current tennis student-athletes will be honored and signees for the upcoming year will be released in accordance with NCAA regulations. Texas A&M-Kingsville athletics will continue to assist student-athletes impacted by the program closure as they navigate next steps.
"We remain focused on our mission to support our student-athletes and enhance their collegiate experience," Salinas said. "This decision positions Texas A&M University-Kingsville Athletics for long-term sustainability and success."
