BROWNWOOD, Texas (Tennis) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (1-0) strong-armed Howard Payne University (0-2) Saturday morning at the Nabers Tennis Center 9-0.
The win over the Yellow Jackets marks the third season the Javelinas has beat them in nine straight sets. HPU has never won a single set against TAMUK in the all-time series head-to-head matchups.
The route started with Valerie Ruiz and Victoria Romanovskaia (1-0) taking doubles No. 1, 8-1. Lisa Carvajal and partner Erika Larrea (1-0) topped their opponent 8-2, while Tabata Lua and Stephanie Baerman wrapped up doubles play with an 8-4 win in doubles No.3.
No. 17 regionally ranked Carvajal (1-0) dominated singles No. 1 6-0, 6-0, followed by Romanovskaia who trampled her opponent for her first win of the season 6-2, 6-2 in set No. 2, claiming the overall team victory. Ruiz (1-0)—who is No. 12 in the South Central region— handled her business in No. 3 6-0, 6-2, while Baerman (6-2, 6-0) and Larrea (6-0, 6-0) capped off the sweep with wins in singles No. 5 and 6, respectively, to improve to 1-0 in the young season.
