KINGSVILLE, Texas (Tennis) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (4-2) picks up its third consecutive win after overcoming the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (1-8) late rally and pulls out the 5-4 victory on the Javelina Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.
UTRGV took the first doubles flight for an early lead, but the Javelinas responded by winning the latter two flights to head into singles with a 2-1 lead. Tabata Lua and Lisa Carvajal (No. 8 in south central region) handled Anastasia Belyaeva and Dominique Esparza 8-2, followed by Erika Larrea and partner Viviana Ortiz who defeated Chloe Leclere and Amanda Guardia 8-4 in flight No.3.
The Hogs extended their lead 3-1 after Carvajal took down Dominique Esparza (6-2, 7-5) to open singles play, but the Vaqueros fought back and won the next three flights to take a 4-3 lead over the home team. Julia Rauer came up big in No. 4 to win a tight dual against Chloe Leclere 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(4) for the tie, and Erika Larrea sealed the win (6-0,6-2) in flight No. 6 over Amanda Guardia to escape defeat. Â
The Blue and Gold will play against St. Edward's at home on February 25th before beginning a six-match road trip.
