Javelinas Play Two Dual Matches This Weekend

TAMUK will have two more home matches before embarking on a six-match road trip

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Tennis) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (2-2, 1-0 LSC) will make a quick trip February 18 to San Antonio to face off against Division III No. 23 Trinity University (3-1) at 1 p.m. before hosting the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (1-7) the following day at 1 p.m. on the Javelina Tennis Courts.

The Javelinas are coming off of a 9-0 victory over UT Permian Basin for their first conference win of the season. The Javs are still ranked No. 7 in the south central region and are led by Valerie Ruiz and Lisa Carvajal who sit 12th and 17th in the region in that order. Ruiz is 3-1 in singles play and is at .500 (2-2) in doubles this season with Victoria Romanovskaia as her partner. Carvajal has yet to drop a singles flight this year (3-0) and is 1-0 with Tabata Lua in doubles. The tandem is ranked No. 8 in the region. Erika Larrea, Stephanie Baerman and Viviana Ortiz are all 2-1 in singles action.

The Tigers are the 23rd nationally ranked team and ranks fifth in the Division III west region. Trinity is on a two-match winning streak and has swept Birmingham Southern, McMurry and Hardin-Simmons, 9-0. Their only loss came in a tight 4-3 match against Division I affiliate Incarnate Word. No. 29 and No. 30 Liza Southwick and Maria Lutz both post a 3-1 record in singles play and also ranks seventh and eighth in the west region, respectively. Lutz and Southwick are 17th in the nation and fifth in the west region as partners in doubles play, but has only teamed up for one match this season. Caroline Kutach (tied 50th in nation and ranks 13 in region) is unblemished this season with a 4-0 record. Trinity will have a crosstown match against St. Mary's (TX) before playing Texas A&M-Kingsville.

UT-Rio Grande Valley will be the first Division I team to play on the new Javelina Tennis Courts on Sunday, February 19. The Vaqueros started the season with a win against Prairie View A&M (5-2), but has since then loss their last seven matches including the last three where they fell against Southern Methodist, UT-Arlington and UT-San Antonio, 7-0.
