KINGSVILLE, Texas (Tennis) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (2-2) opens Lone Star Conference competition with a shutout against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (0-3), 9-0, on Saturday evening at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
Valerie Ruiz and Victoria Romanovskaia set the tone with an 8-6 victory in doubles No. 1, followed by the first appearance of the No.8 tandem in the region—Tabata Lua and Lisa Carvajal—who crushed their opponent 8-1 in flight No.2. Erika Larrea and partner Vivian Ortiz topped Stephanie Prats and Fernanda Orona 8-2 to wrap-up doubles play giving the Javelinas a 3-0 start to the match.
Carvajal and Ruiz led the charge with strong wins in singles No. 1 and 2, while Romanovskaia had to rally back to defeat Sanchez (3-6, 7-6(2), 14-12) to pull off the first three wins in singles action. It was smooth sailings after that as Julia Rauer, Ortiz and Stephanie Baerman trampled their opponents 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-2, respectively in flights No. 4-6 to complete the sweep.Â
The Javs will return to their home courts on February 16 to face nationally ranked No. 10 St. Mary's University at 2 p.m.
