BISHOP, Texas (Tennis) – Seniors
Mariaxi Herrera and
Marija Dimitrovska extended their singles win streaks to four as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (5-12) nearly upset No. 24 Trinity University (11-9) in a 5-4 setback Saturday at the Bishop High School Tennis Courts.
Herrera ended her day with a victory in doubles No. 2 with
Erika Larrea, 8-4, and a win in singles No. 1 over No. 9 Marie Lutz, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. Herrera and Larrea are now 7-2 as a tandem and Herrera is 7-2 in her last nine singles flights.
Dimitrosvka upended Liza Southwick in singles No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, to earn her 28
th career singles win, the most in Javelina history. The senior is 11-6 in the spring and 8-1 in her last nine singles matches.
Paula Saenz was victorious in flight No. 4, defeating Andrea De Leon, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, improving to 6-3 in singles No. 4 this season. For her career, Saenz is 18-8, the second best winning percentage in school history behind Larrea, who is 15-5 in singles play despite a close match in flight No. 5.
Madi Gomez and Dimitrovska nearly took doubles No. 3 from Blaire Porter and De Leon, before falling to the duo, 8-6, as Texas A&M-Kingsville went into singles play down 2-1.
The homestand continues April 15 at 9:30 a.m. when the Javelinas host nationally-ranked Cameron University in the Lone Star Conference opener. Prior to the match, seniors
