SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Tennis) – No. 43 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (2-6) picked up singles victories from
Mariaxi Herrera,
Paula Saenz,
Erika Larrea and
Madi Gomez but Florida Southern College (4-3) defeated the Javelinas, 5-4, Sunday morning at Rohrbach Stadium on the campus of St. Mary's University.
Herrera won a nailbiter in the top singles flight, taking down Linnea Skymberg, 6-4, 1-6 (13-11). Saenz came out on top in singles No. 4, 6-5 before her opponent retired, Larrea took No. 5 6-0, 6-0 and the freshman Gomez defeated Shannon Griffin, 6-3, 6-3.
The Javelinas head to Midland, Texas next week for three matches in two days at the Bush Tennis Center. On March 11, the Hogs battle Western New Mexico and the University of the Southwest and on March 12, Texas A&M-Kingsville battles junior college powerhouse North Central Texas College.
