EDINBURG, Texas (Tennis) – Reinstated in 2011-12 as a varsity program, Texas A&M University-Kingsville's tennis team has high expectations in year four. Led by first year head coach
Autumn Williams, the Javelinas have eight nationally-ranked opponents on their 2015 schedule.
Regionally-ranked is junior
Mariaxi Herrera, who earned All-Lone Star Conference singles honors and paired with
Marija Dimitrovska in doubles No. 1 to earn All-LSC doubles nods. Also returning are
Eleni Anastasova,
Erika Larrea and
Tabata Lua and three newcomers –
Nadia Grlj,
Paula Saenz and
Martina Urrutia-Achleitner – joint the squad. Williams is joined by assistant coach
Nirmal Goswami and manager
Emily Vela.
With just two home matches – March 28 versus No. 17 Midwestern State University and April 18 against No. 45 Tarleton State University – the Javelinas' regional schedule is full of stiff competition.
The 2015 season begins on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. versus University of Texas-Pan American (2-1) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The Javelinas are 0-2 all-time against the Broncs, but Herrera downed Wanda Beguelin, 1-6, 7-6, 10-6, in singles No. 1 last year (Feb. 28).
The Division I affiliate Broncs are currently 2-1 on the young season and are scheduled to face No. 6 Baylor University tonight at 6 p.m. in Waco.
